In-Depth Blog Post #4!

March 4, 2011 · 4 Comments · Uncategorized

So let me start off by saying how much I am enjoying my in-depth so far!

I’ve really got going on creating a portfolio, you can look at it by clicking here. Also check out my previous post with some of my favourite pictures I have taken so far! Once I collect more images, I’ll decide which aspect of photography I want to focus in on (eg. macro, portraits, etc.). This week I also participated in my first Daily Shoot assignment! The Daily Shoot is an online photo project where the website gives you a topic each day, and you’re suppose to go out and take a picture of your interpretation of it! It was created to encourage photographers to go out in the world and practice their skills everyday!

I’ve really began noticing how much lines affect a picture, and how it draws your eyes to certain parts of the picture. Also I’ve learned that filling the frame of the picture with only the subject, it creates a much more dramatic photo, as opposed to having so much un-nessesary background.

My dad has been really helpful in showing me how to work a digital camera and to change the light settings which is crucial for taking good pictures. Mr. McElgunn has also been teaching me a lot about the basics of picture aesthetics, and what really captures the audience’s eyes.

My goal for the next few weeks is to continue participating in the Daily Shoot assignment, as well as begin to take pictures of people. That way I can  see the difference in shooting people as opposed to inanimate objects.

Can’t wait!

Wow!! The daily shoot is a terrific idea! It’s practice, learning, and collaboration all in one. Kudos to whoever thought of that. I’m sort of a believer that there really shouldn’t be any uniform measures by which you can use the internet to learn.

I’m also picking up on the lingo, such as “shooting people”. That’s a phrase, when taken out of context, can really raise eyebrows! I find it to be very amusing.

Hi Ms. Bentley! My name is Samantha, and I am a student in Dr. Strange’s EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama.

I have always been interested in photography as well. However, I am not any good at it. I looked at your portfolio.. Amazing! My favorite was the picture titled “colour.” I loved the lighting and reflection. It was simple yet still very eye-catching.

The Daily Shoot Assignment is a brilliant idea! I definitely think that it will help spark your creativity and imagination. Keep up the good work, you’re doing a great job! Thanks for sharing.

My name is Courtney Mathis and I am in Dr. Strange’s EDM310 class. I am reading you blog as a class assignment. I think the daily shoot sounds like a great idea. It is such a good tool for people who want to be photographers, but really do not know what to take pictures of.

I just recently got engaged and am having engagement photos taken in the next few weeks. My photographer likes to “think outside the box” she takes back ground that would other wise be unattractive, and makes them beautiful. Such as railroad tracks, run down houses, brick walls and other abstract places. I am having my photos taken on an old run down pier, and I know that she is going to be able to make that pier look beautiful!
